Purpose of Technology Transfer
Academic innovation and breakthrough is often met with enthusiasm with the research community. However, without patent protection and a company to invest to further the technology, the breakthrough is limited to publication. The Technology Transfer Office (TTO) looks to transform ideas and innovation into tangible products while creating revenue for the university, inventor(s), and further research.
The technology transfer invention process is designed to benefit South Dakota State University, the local economy, and society as a whole. The invention process creates market incentives for companies, investors, and entrepreneurs to further develop and bring to market South Dakota State University inventions that have hope to become seeds for new products, companies, jobs, and economic value.
Transforming an invention into a successful product is a challenging process that requires joint effort among researchers, TTO personnel, venture groups, and business partners. The TTO facilitates this process by evaluating and determining how inventions can be furthered to create commercial application.
